Sore, Swollen Tongue and Mouth Ulcers
Iron deficiency affects the rapidly-dividing cells in your mouth, causing a swollen, sore, pale tongue (glossitis). Your tongue might look unusually smooth because the bumps (papillae) flatten. You may also develop painful cracks at the corners of your mouth (angular cheilitis) and recurrent mouth ulcers. These oral symptoms are your body screaming that it doesn't have enough iron to maintain healthy tissue turnover.
