Craving Ice or Non-Food Items (Pica)

A bizarre but well-documented symptom of severe iron deficiency is craving non-food items — most commonly ice (pagophagia), but also dirt, clay, starch, paper, or chalk. This condition is called pica, and while the exact mechanism isn't fully understood, it's strongly correlated with iron deficiency. If you find yourself compulsively chewing ice or craving unusual substances, your iron may be dangerously low.

Pro Tip

Compulsive ice-chewing (going through trays of ice daily) is one of the most specific signs of iron deficiency.
