Waking Up Gasping for Air
Waking suddenly from sleep feeling like you can't breathe — gasping for air or feeling suffocated — can indicate pulmonary edema (fluid in lungs), severe asthma, or heart failure affecting lung function. While sleep apnea can cause similar symptoms, respiratory-related gasping often comes with a feeling of drowning or fluid in your chest. This is frightening and needs urgent evaluation.
