Puffy Eyes, Especially in the Morning
Waking up with consistently puffy, swollen eyes — even when you've had enough sleep — can be an early sign of kidney disease. The puffiness occurs because damaged kidneys are leaking protein into your urine instead of keeping it in your blood. Albumin protein normally prevents fluid from leaking into tissues, so when it's lost, fluid accumulates around the eyes. This is different from occasional puffiness after a poor night's sleep.
