Dry Skin and Brittle Nails
Thyroid hormones control skin cell turnover and oil production. When your thyroid is underactive, skin becomes dry, flaky, and thick — particularly on elbows, knees, and heels. Your nails may become ridged, brittle, and break easily. The skin might also take on a slightly yellowish tint because the body can't efficiently convert beta-carotene to vitamin A without adequate thyroid hormone.
