A pulmonary embolism often causes a sharp, stabbing chest pain that worsens when you take a deep breath, cough, or move. Unlike heart attack pain (which is more like pressure), PE pain is sharp and related to breathing. You might feel like someone is stabbing you in the chest every time you inhale. This pain means a clot has reached your lungs and is blocking blood flow.
